The Go-To Elopement Location Guide for Vail, Colorado
Mountain peaks, powdery snow, and legendary views—even if you don’t know much about Vail, you’ve probably heard about these amazing attributes.
When it comes to eloping in Colorado, it’s really hard to go wrong—no matter what location you pick. (I’ve never helped plan or capture an elopement in Colorado and thought, “Nope, this was a bad idea.”) If you’re looking for the quintessential mountain town elopement, Vail is hard to beat. The views, adventures, and amenities are unmatched.
Vail is a compact ski town nestled on the largest ski mountain in Colorado. Although it’s famous for snow sports, this year-round adventure land is filled with stunning scenery, delicious dining, exciting events, and unique shopping.
While Colorado boasts plenty of stellar ski towns (looking at you, Breckenridge), Vail feels extra special. It’s accessible, charming, and quintessentially Colorado. This guide dives into all the details you need to know about Vail as an elopement spot—read on to learn more!
The Top Reasons to Elope in Vail
If you really want my top 20 reasons to elope in Vail, let’s hop on a call. I’ll sing you a love song about Vail. But for now, here’s a taste of what makes it so wonderful:
Every Season is Straight-Up Gorgeous
Most people think of Vail as a snowy paradise for classic Colorado winter elopements. But if winter isn’t your vibe, don’t worry. Vail absolutely delivers beauty year-round.
- Fall: The leaves set the mountains ablaze with golds and reds.
- Spring: Wildflowers bloom everywhere, creating vibrant landscapes.
- Summer: Perfect for mountain biking, hiking, and outdoor adventures.
No matter when you choose to elope, Vail’s natural beauty won’t disappoint.
Did I Mention Mountain Views?
The views for elopements in Vail are truly unbeatable. Whether you’re soaking them in from a luxurious suite in Vail Village, the top of a ski lift, or a scenic hike, the panoramic beauty is unforgettable.
Luxury is Available On a Whim
While rugged adventures are plentiful, Vail also caters to those who love luxury. From indulgent spa days and fine dining to incredible experiences, this town offers it all. Plus, the après-ski activities are on point.
Vail Vendors For the Win
Vail’s proximity to Denver means you have access to a wide range of amazing vendors. Even better, the town itself has a stellar selection of local experts. If you’re unsure who to hire, I’ve got you covered.
ALL the Outdoor Activities
No matter the season, Vail is an outdoor lover’s dream. From skiing and snowboarding in the winter to hiking, mountain biking, and 4×4 exploring in the summer, the adventures are endless.
Easy Drive from the Airport
Vail’s convenience is another big win. It’s just a two-hour drive from Denver International Airport, with well-maintained roads even in winter. This accessibility makes it a top choice for couples, especially if guests are joining you.
The Best Locations to Elope in Vail
This is just a short list of my favorite spots in and around Vail for an elopement. Trust me, there are even more hidden gems, and I’d love to help you find them.
Shrine Pass
Shrine Pass, named after the nearby Mount of the Holy Cross, is a must-elope spot. The hillsides bloom with wildflowers in spring and summer, while fall brings bright orange and yellow grasses and leaves. The crisp air, blue skies, and stunning countryside create the perfect backdrop.
Julia’s Deck
Julia’s Deck offers panoramic views, including a breathtaking vista of Mount of the Holy Cross. This serene spot, accessible by trail, feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of the resort town. It’s a peaceful and intimate location to start your forever – the perfect Vail elopement location.
Vail Pass
Vail Pass winds through the Rocky Mountains, showcasing some of Colorado’s most famous vistas. Open year-round, it features plenty of trails for hiking, biking, and, of course, saying “I do.”
Gore Creek Bridge
This charming little bridge feels like a hidden treasure in the mountains near Vail. With its sweet arches and the sound of Gore Creek trickling below, it’s a quiet retreat perfect for an intimate ceremony.
Let’s Talk Season: The Best Time of the Year to Elope in Vail
Fall in Vail (September-November)
A fall elopement in Vail is pure magic. The aspens turn gold, red, and orange, creating a stunning landscape. Crisp air surrounds you, and snow often dusts the peaks. Be sure to bring layers—temperatures can change quickly at high elevations.
Winter in Vail (December- April)
Winter is perfect for couples who love snow and winter sports. Vail offers epic peaks and stunning snowy landscapes without requiring intense hikes. However, be prepared for cold weather, even on sunny bluebird days.
Spring in Vail (May-June)
Spring in Colorado is unpredictable. Some years, snow sticks around, while others bring unseasonably warm weather. I always recommend having backup locations just in case Mother Nature surprises us.
Summer in Vail (July-August)
Summer brings warm days and endless sunshine. Wildflowers explode across the mountains, and the weather is perfect for outdoor exploration. Don’t forget your layers and sunscreen!
The How-Tos & Paperwork: Vail, Colorado Wedding Permit Details
I’m fully aware that this part of the guide isn’t going to be the most interesting or entertaining—but it’s definitely necessary. It’s also something couples need to know before they decide on the location they’d like to elope.
I promise I’ll keep this brief—but def read up on what you need to know for a beautiful, seamless, and legal elopement.
Location Permits & Fees
Lots of spots on are the table for legal elopements in Vail—but you’ve gotta get permission for most of them. The good news? It’s easy as can be—and I can help! My best recommendation is to do research on the spots you want to elope—find out if you’re able to have the number of people you plan to bring, if the season makes it accessible, and if you need to apply for any permits or pay any fees to make it happen. While there are definitely some places you can’t have your ceremony, it’s important to do research on all the spots you have in mind—that way you’re doing everything by the book!
Wedding Permits & Paperwork
Here are a few more quick things you need to know about eloping in Vail—I’ve laid them out here for a quick, easy list:
- Marriage licenses must be used within 35 days of the issue date in Colorado
- You don’t have to get your marriage license in Vail—CO is cool with you getting your license in any county so long as it’s in Colorado
- No witnesses are necessary—no officiants, either (we’ll get to that in a second)
- Licenses cost $30—but some counties might only accept cash, so prepare for that
- There’s no waiting period—AKA, if you want to get your license, get married, and turn it back in all in the same 24 hours, that possibility is all yours.
- You must file the license (in person or by mail) in the county it was issued
**IMPORTANT NOTE** Some of these details might change because of COVID, the best advice I have is to check the county’s site to get all the info you’ll need.
Everything You Need to Know About Self-Solemnizing
OK, we’ve finally made it to my favorite thing about eloping in CO—self-solemnizing. Here’s the deal. Self-solemnizing means you don’t need witnesses, officiants, or any type of official to make your marriage ceremony an official act—you can marry yourselves without any type of official present.
Every state has different rules about what “counts” for an official wedding—often, you’ll have to include a witness or two and have an authorized person perform your marriage ceremony. But Colorado? They’re chill—they’re all about couples doing the damn thing all by themselves.
*BONUS TIP* Because self-solemnization is a thing and witnesses aren’t needed, you can TOTALLY let your pup sign your marriage license with their little paw dipped in ink. C’mon—who isn’t a fan of this situation?
